Material Engineering

Why This Composite Exists -- and Why It Matters

PC alone yellows under UV and scratches easily. PMMA alone shatters under impact. The PC+PMMA composite was engineered to eliminate both failure modes simultaneously -- delivering a material that performs where single-layer plastics fail.

At Winson, we control the co-extrusion process in-house, which means we control the bond integrity, thickness ratio, and optical transmission -- not a third-party laminator.

Iris's Procurement Insight

"Most sourcing failures with composite sheets come from hidden delamination at the bond interface -- a defect that doesn't appear until field deployment. Our 100% peel-strength inspection eliminates this risk at source."

The Inspection Protocol That Eliminates Field Failures

Composite sheets fail in the field for three reasons: delamination, optical inconsistency, and dimensional drift. Our inspection protocol was designed specifically to catch each failure mode before the sheet leaves our facility.

Spectral Transmission Analysis

High-precision spectrophotometer measures light transmittance at 380-780nm across the full sheet surface, not just center-point sampling.

90° Peel Strength Test

Every batch undergoes ASTM D903 peel testing at the PC/PMMA interface. Minimum 4.0 N/mm threshold enforced. Delamination-risk batches are quarantined.

CMM Dimensional Verification

Coordinate Measuring Machine verifies critical dimensions on 100% of CNC-machined parts. Tolerance reports included in delivery documentation.

UV Aging Accelerated Test

UV-stabilized grades undergo 500h xenon arc lamp aging per ISO 4892-2. Yellowness Index delta reported and must remain ΔYI ≤ 2.0.

Technical FAQ

Questions Engineers Actually Ask

Answers written by our engineering team -- not marketing.

What is the minimum order quantity for a custom thickness/color combination?
For standard clear PC+PMMA in standard thicknesses (2mm, 3mm, 4mm), MOQ starts at 50 sheets. For custom color PMMA layers or non-standard thickness ratios, MOQ is typically 100-200 sheets depending on the co-extrusion run setup. Prototype quantities (5-20 sheets) are available at a setup surcharge for engineering validation purposes.
Can the PMMA layer be applied to both sides (dual-face composite)?
Yes. Our co-extrusion line supports PMMA/PC/PMMA symmetric three-layer structures. The PMMA ratio per side can be set independently (e.g., 15% front / 10% back). Dual-face structures are recommended for applications where both faces are exposed to contact or UV -- such as freestanding display panels or two-sided HMI covers.
How does the bond interface perform under thermal cycling? Will it delaminate in automotive environments?
Because our sheets are co-extruded (not adhesive-laminated), the PC/PMMA interface is a molecular-level melt bond -- not a glue layer. Thermal cycling tests per IEC 60068-2-14 (-40°C to +85°C, 100 cycles) show zero delamination in our standard grades. For extended automotive temperature ranges (-40°C to +105°C), we offer a modified resin formulation -- please specify in your RFQ.
Can you match a specific Pantone color for the PMMA tint layer?
Yes, with a color matching process. You provide the Pantone reference (or RAL/NCS), we produce a color chip in PMMA resin for your approval before committing to the composite sheet production run. Color matching adds approximately 5-7 business days to the prototype lead time. Delta E ≤ 1.5 is our standard acceptance criterion.
What documentation do you provide for EU customs and compliance audits?
Standard documentation package includes: ISO 9001 certificate of conformance, RoHS 3 test report (IEC 62321 series), REACH SVHC declaration, material data sheet (TDS), batch-specific QC report with measured values (transmittance, haze, thickness, peel strength), and packing list with HS code. Additional documents (MSDS, third-party test reports, factory audit support) are available on request.
Can you perform silk-screen printing on the composite sheet surface?
Yes. We operate an in-house automated silk-screen printing line capable of up to 6-color printing on the PMMA surface. Registration accuracy is ±0.1mm. We can print functional elements (button labels, logos, bezels, gradient effects) directly on the sheet before or after CNC cutting. UV-cured inks with chemical resistance options are available for medical and industrial applications.
