Expert Answers

Frequently Asked Questions

Technical questions from procurement engineers and R&D teams -- answered.

What is the difference between absorptive and reflective (interference) IR-cut filters?
Absorptive filters use a doped glass substrate (e.g., Schott KG series) that absorbs NIR energy. They are angle-insensitive -- ideal for wide-angle lenses where the angle of incidence varies significantly. The trade-off is heat buildup under high-intensity illumination.

Reflective (interference) filters use thin-film coatings to reflect NIR. They offer sharper cut-off slopes and are preferred for telecentric or low-divergence optical systems. However, the cut-off wavelength shifts with angle of incidence (typically ~0.1 nm/degree). We recommend the type based on your system's chief ray angle and illumination conditions.
Can you match our existing supplier's spectral performance exactly?
Yes. Send us your current supplier's datasheet or measured spectral curve, and our coating engineers will design a matching stack. We routinely qualify as a second source for customers requiring supply chain redundancy. We can also improve on certain parameters (e.g., tighter cut-off slope, higher blocking OD) while maintaining drop-in compatibility with your existing mechanical assembly.
What quality documentation comes with each shipment?
Every shipment includes: (1) Certificate of Conformance (CoC) signed by QC; (2) Spectral transmission data (measured, not nominal) for each lot; (3) RoHS/REACH Declaration of Conformity; (4) Dimensional inspection report. For medical and automotive customers, we also provide full lot traceability records, material certifications, and process control charts on request.
What is the minimum order quantity (MOQ) for custom IR-cut filters?
For prototype and engineering samples: MOQ 10 pieces. For production runs: typically 100-500 pieces depending on substrate size and coating complexity. There is no re-qualification penalty when scaling from prototype to production -- we use the same equipment, same process parameters, and same operators. Volume pricing tiers start at 500, 2,000, and 10,000+ pieces.
How do you handle the wavelength shift with angle of incidence (AOI)?
For interference-type filters, the cut-off wavelength blue-shifts with increasing AOI at approximately 0.08-0.12 nm per degree. For systems with F/# < 2.8 or chief ray angles > 20°, we recommend either: (a) designing the filter with a compensated nominal cut-off to account for the expected AOI distribution, or (b) switching to an absorptive substrate type. Share your optical system parameters and we'll recommend the optimal solution.
What are your lead times for prototypes and production orders?
Prototypes (10-50 pcs): 7-14 business days from drawing approval.
Small production runs (100-1,000 pcs): 15-25 business days.
Large production runs (>5,000 pcs): 25-40 business days.

Expedited production (50% lead time reduction) is available for an additional fee. We recommend buffer stock programs for customers with regular monthly demand -- we can pre-produce and hold inventory for just-in-time delivery.
