FAQ

Every objection, answered honestly

Experienced procurement managers ask hard questions. Here are the real answers.

Tolerances & quality

What dimensional tolerance can you hold in mass production?
For standard sapphire windows (5–50 mm diameter), we hold ±0.01 mm to ±0.02 mm on critical dimensions in stable mass production. Below ±0.01 mm is achievable but adds 20–30% to cycle time — we will tell you upfront if your drawing demands it.
How do you verify surface quality?
Every part is inspected under a Zygo interferometer (flatness, surface figure) and a Nomarski DIC microscope (scratch-dig per MIL-PRF-13830B). Spectral transmission is measured on a calibrated spectrophotometer. Raw data files are attached to your CoC — not just a pass/fail stamp.
What is your typical yield rate for complex geometries?
Standard round windows: 99.2–99.8%. Complex shapes (multi-faceted, drilled, tight-tolerance steps): 96–98% after the first stable production run. We share actual yield data from your pilot batch before committing to mass production pricing.

Lead times & capacity

How long does prototyping take?
Standard sapphire prototypes: 10–15 working days from approved drawing. Complex geometries or custom coatings: 15–20 days. We send you a day-by-day Gantt on order confirmation — and we call you if anything shifts, not after the deadline.
Can you handle urgent orders?
Yes, with a 25–40% expedite surcharge for orders that compress the schedule by more than 30%. We will not promise a date we cannot keep. If the physics say 12 days minimum, we tell you 12 days.
What is your monthly capacity?
Sapphire grinding and polishing: approximately 8,000–12,000 pieces per month (25 mm equivalent). Large flat windows (>80 mm): 600–800 pieces per month. We can provide a formal capacity letter for your supply-chain audit.

Pricing & MOQ

Is there a minimum order quantity?
No hard MOQ. We accept single-piece prototype orders. Unit pricing for 1–4 pieces is 3–5× the mass production price due to fixture and setup amortisation. We recommend a 5-piece pilot batch to validate fit-form-function before scaling.
Why is sapphire more expensive than glass?
Three reasons: (1) raw crystal cost — synthetic sapphire boule is 15–25× the cost of equivalent optical glass; (2) machining time — Mohs 9 hardness means diamond tooling and slow feed rates; (3) yield — a single surface scratch during polishing scraps the part. The cost is real, and so is the performance advantage.
What payment terms do you offer for new customers?
A 50% deposit is required upon order confirmation, and the remaining 50% must be paid before shipment. We accept T/T, L/C (orders >$15,000), and PayPal (prototype orders <$2,000).

Compliance & documentation

Are you RoHS and REACH compliant?
Yes. Sapphire (Al₂O₃) contains no restricted substances under RoHS 3 or the REACH SVHC list. We provide a full Declaration of Conformity and MSDS with every order. If your product requires EU CE marking, we supply the documentation package your notified body will ask for.
Can I audit your factory?
Yes — and we encourage it. We have hosted procurement audits from clients in Germany, Switzerland, and the USA. No pre-arranged "show floors." You see the actual production line, cleanroom, and inspection lab. Contact Iris directly: [email protected].
Do you sign NDAs?
Yes, as standard practice. We sign your NDA or our standard bilateral NDA before receiving any drawings or specifications. Our NDA has been reviewed by EU-based legal counsel and is enforceable under both Chinese and international law.
